ARPA
The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) is the central research and development organization for the Department of Defense (DoD). It manages and directs selected basic and applied research and development projects for DoD, and pursues research and technology where risk and payoff are both very high and where success may provide dramatic advances for traditional military roles and missions and dual-use applications.
- The ARPA Electronic Systems Technology Office (ESTO) Home Page
  The strategic thrust of the Electronic Systems Technology Office (ESTO) of the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) is electronic systems technology. R&D efforts seek to achieve smaller, lighter, more mobile information systems. ESTO pursues fundamental change by investing across the full maturity range from basic research in key sciences and technologies to selected technology insertions into existing military platforms. ESTO seeks both technology products (displays, packages, actuators, and analog integrated circuits) and processes (manufacturing, prototyping, infrastructure and computer-aided design).
  ESTO Research and Development Programs:
- ARPA iMEMS (integrated MicroElectroMechanical Systems) Program
  Analog Devices and UC Berkeley are maintaining a joint server on the exciting new technology of surface micromachining for sensors & actuators. Through an ARPA US government contract, ADI is allowing users from the general engineering public to be able to access ADI's integrated sensor technology. The server contains most of the info needed to get started designing in iMEMS (integrated MicroElectroMechanical Systems). A mirror server at MIT is also available.

MICAS: Medical & Integrated Circuits and Sensors
The MICAS research group works on all aspects of analogue design and develops software tools for analogue designers. They develop mixed analogue-digital designs in application fields such as telecommunications, consumer electronics, biomedical systems and sensor interfaces. Mechanical and chemical sensors can be added on chip and realized in MICAS's own facilities.

Rapid Prototyping of Application Specific Signal Processors (RASSP)
The Rapid Prototyping of Application Specific Signal Processors (RASSP) program is a major Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) / Tri-Service initiative to reinvent the process by which embedded digital signal processors are developed. The goal is a four-fold reduction in the time from concept to fielded prototype on both new designs and design upgrades, with similar improvements in life cycle cost, quality, and supportability. The RASSP approach to Design Automation relies heavily on the VHSIC Hardware Description Language (VHDL) as a unifying design representation language and tool integration approach at the systems engineering level.

SHARE
"A Methodology and Environment
for Collaborative Product Development"
The objective of SHARE is to provide the enabling technology that will allow design engineers to access, via the network, information not typically available in a single user environment. SHARE is an Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA)-sponsored project and is partially funded by Navy contract SHARE N00014-92-J-1833. The participants are Enterprise Integration Technologies (EIT), Stanford's Center for Design Research (CDR), and the Stanford Integrated Manufacturing Association (SIMA).

  An agent-based system for the concurrent design of cable harnesses, sponsored by Lockheed.
- NEXT-LINK
  This is a SHARE-sponsored continuation of First-Link, developing agent coordination technology.

SIGDA: the ACM Special Interest Group on Design Automation
SIGDA is the ACM technical society for Design Automation professionals, involved in the application of the computer to all phases of electrical and electronic design. It sponsors DAC (Design Automation Conference) and other leading conferences and workshops as well as many other useful and innovative projects.
